Your Newsletters

"My newsletters make me squirm! They always sound so 'salesy' and not like me. I hate sending them as I sound as if I am just asking for money.”

If I’ve heard this once, I have heard it a thousand times, and each time it makes me a little sad. Newsletters are so exciting! In an age where people are coming away from social media platforms to  invest their time in reading curated newsletters and articles from companies they love, the humble newsletter is seeing a huge resurgence.

There are three types of newsletters that you can use interchangeably; the newsflash, the long read, and the hybrid.

The Newsflash! is the opportunity to grab your customer’s attention.

  • You are opening your online store early to subscribers; the newsletter is the ideal place to pop a discount code up.

  • The holidays are approaching and you would like to make sure pre-orders for your handmade gifts are given priority; an order form is an easy and efficient way of running this sale through your newsletter.

  • You are running an event and you want to highlight the workbooks, free quizzes and booking links; the newsflash style to get this information to your customers.

The Long Read newsletter is often seen as a mini-blog that you don’t want to archive. Thematic events like spring equinox and winter solstice are lovely to write about, but you may not want that to be repeated every 12 weeks on the blog, year after year. Also, your work and content are fluid and you may not want to get attached to an idea for more than a month, and this is when you can send a Long Read via email. It also serves as a way of your subscribers getting to know you even more, and they are the people you want to work with; Long Reads allow them to have access to ‘The Club’.

Many independent businesses choose to produce one Newsflash and one Long Read a month. This allows a high level of valued connection with their client-base on a bi-weekly schedule without cluttering up the in-boxes. â€‹

The Hybrid is a wonderful way of combining the newsflash and the long read; it allows customers to know what you are up to in your business, whilst giving them the discount codes. This is ideal for start-ups who may have a small email list (under 200), and want to offer a flavour of what is happening, whilst also building their subscriber list. Links, codes, and anecdotes of the studio pets can all be popped into The Hybrid.
